Criteria for Choosing Conference Interpreters
Simultaneous interpretation is one of the most challenging and sensitive fields of translation. The success of your international conference depends entirely on the interpreter's ability to convey ideas and terminologies quickly and accurately. Here is how to choose:
1. Specialization in the Conference Topic
Medical interpretation differs completely from oil & gas or international law conferences. Make sure the interpreter has background knowledge and prior experience in your specific industry.
2. Professional Credentials & Experience
Always hire interpreters registered with renowned professional bodies such as the International Association of Conference Interpreters (AIIC) or the Egyptian Translators Association.
3. Working in Pairs (Co-interpreting)
Interpretation requires intense mental focus. Therefore, an interpreter cannot work alone for more than 30-40 minutes. You must hire at least two interpreters per booth to take turns every 30 minutes.
4. Professional Sound Equipment & Booths
Successful interpretation requires soundproof interpretation booths, wireless transmitters, and high-quality headsets for the audience.
